Do you know these five common trauma responses tha Do you know these five common trauma responses that you might not realize are trauma responses?
- Extreme self sufficiency, never asking anyone else for help, refusing to rely on other people.
- The body really does keep the score! Unexplained body aches, headaches, stomach problems, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, and other physical ailments have been linked to trauma.
- Feeling detached from what’s going on around you and even yourself. My clients often describe “feeling floaty.” Maybe feeling like you’re watching yourself do things, or feeling like a character in a movie, feeling like you’re not real or things around you aren’t real are all ways of describing dissociation.
- Depression, feeling helpless or hopeless, changes in sleep or appetite, isolating socially, loss of interest in things you used to enjoy, difficulty getting out of bed and/or doing basic personal care (aka “activities of daily living.”)
- Needing to be in control and managing the discomfort that comes with the unknown by planning everything.
Which of these feel a little too close to home for you? 🫣 I know some of these hurt my feelings a little bit!

Spiritual abuse and religious trauma are sadly und Spiritual abuse and religious trauma are sadly under-addressed in therapy and counseling. A lack of awareness on the part of clients and therapists as well as a lack of training on the part of professionals mean that many people are not receiving help - even if they know to seek it. Here in Mississippi, it’s difficult to simply find a counselor that doesn’t practice from a religious perspective. These are some of the many reasons why I have decided to focus more on religious trauma and spiritual abuse. I have seen a need for it as well as hearing from clients the harm that has been caused, often unintentionally, my professionals who have difficulty accepting that their religion could hurt people. You can learn more about therapy for spiritual abuse and religious trauma on my website. Link in bio.

Pride Month is still important because all over Mi Pride Month is still important because all over Mississippi and the country, people carry the shame that has been instilled in them by a heterosexist society. 🔻TW for mention of suicide🔻

This Memorial Day let’s remember not only the pe This Memorial Day let’s remember not only the people who have died in combat but those who have died due to unaddressed mental health issues. 22 veterans complete suicide each day and only 15% of veterans in need of mental health treatment receive it. 15% of veterans have a substance use disorder. 1 in 3 veterans seeking substance abuse treatment also have PTSD.

I know everyone - myself included - has been strug I know everyone - myself included - has been struggling with the political and social upheaval of the last month of so. That’s on top of the grief, uncertainty, and loss that most of us have been feeling the last 2+ years. I have been changing some of my daily routine to help myself feel less anxious and overwhelmed so I wanted to share some of that with y’all in the next few posts.
🌱 I stopped watching the news in February but I’ve also been spending less time on social media.
🌱 I’ve been reading more and it’s also easier to focus without the urge to pick up my phone and check social media every few minute.
🌱 Spending more time outside. In July and August it will be much less pleasant to be outside in Mississippi so I’m trying to enjoy as much of it as I can now!
What are some changes you’ve made to help you feel less stressed lately?
